Open Kitchen MCR is a not-for-profit project fighting to reduce food waste, pushing for a sustainable food future, and using food to bring people together and tackle social isolation. But what do we actually do?

Catering - We operate Manchester’s first waste food pay-it-forward catering social enterprise​.

SURPLUS - working in partnership with Beer Nouveau, we’ve launched a range of beers made using fruit and herbs that would otherwise go to waste. We also run regular beer and food evenings from Beer Nouveau’s brew tap. 


Pay-It-Forward - All of our income generating activities support our community work. We deliver food and supplies to two homelessness hostels and one independent food bank every week, we support Coffee4Craig in providing hot nutritious meals and a warm welcome for people who are street homeless at their centre in the Northern Quarter, and we support the Birthday Stars Project to throw parties for families who are currently in temporary accommodation. 

In the short term we aim to reduce as much food waste as possible by feeding bellies not bins. In the long term we aim to campaignnand raise awareness to stop food waste from happening, and make our food system more sustainable and fairer for all.

A big thanks to Open Kitchen MCR for doing a great job catering my birthday party. So many of my friends commented how much they enjoyed the food and how friendly the service was from the team. They rose to the challenge of an all vegan event and really impressed everyone with a delicious and inventive menu.
