October Round-Up

So it’s official, Winter is coming! Time to grab your warm clothes, snuggle up on the sofa and eat some seriously hearty food. Our chefs have created a bacon and chorizo stew recipe that is not only delicious but is a great way to use up any leftover veg! You can get the full recipe here and it also includes a vegan alternative.

No October is complete without celebrating the German tradition of Oktoberfest. We had a blast at Beer Nouveau’s first annual “Oktoberfaust” this year, serving up stews, wursts and homemade pretzels to accompany a range of authentic beers on offer. The food went down a treat, but don’t take our word for it! Check out this brilliant blog from foodie Gin Fuelled Bluestocking here.

By continuing our work with a number of businesses, wholesalers and supermarkets in the city region, we intercepted a total of 3.8 tonnes of lovely food that would have otherwise gone to waste and 300kgs of household items in October. We welcomed Manchester Central and Deeside Cereals to the Open Kitchen MCR family as they have chosen to collaborate with us to reduce food waste.

We intercepted 165kgs of veg from Manchester Central including fresh rocket that the chefs served with fish in a noodle crumb. Deeside Cereals had a whole lot of luxury chocolate they couldn’t use and so we transformed it into a very large and very moreish rocky road. We want to say a huge thank you to both organisations and we look forward to working with you in the future!

We would like to give a big shout out to the blummin’ awesome folk at Tech for Good Live who have been a supporter of our work for many months. We have really enjoyed catering their fabulous events focusing on ways modern technology can be used to help people and planet. This October, we catered for their climate change event which hosted a number of inspirational speakers including Eve Holt, Labour Councillor and Director of Happen Together, and Rachel Lewis from Plastic Shed. You can find out more about Tech for Good Live here.

As the weather gets colder, people experiencing crisis often have an even harder time. We are committed to working with a number of wonderful community organisations who support vulnerable people in the city to access hot, nutritional meals as well as other food and household items. Our chefs made a wholesome Autumnal crumble for Coffee4Craig's service users this month, and our lovely Collections & Logistics Manager Adrian delivered food and supplies to Emmeline’s Pantry and other community food banks every week.

Every catering order and event supports our work with these much needed community organisations. We would like to say thank you to all our customers and supporters for making this happen! Let’s look after each other together!

See you next month for our November round-up!
